It is muted & when I click on it it does not get on actually when I click on the sound(Audio) Icon it should be on & off which is not happening. Thinking of buying a personal navigation device, but not quite ready to commit the cash? Don't worry. You may already have all the navigation hardware you need. That's because most new cell phones sport internal GPS chips—all you need to do is activate the software. Better yet, the phones included in this story are all $100 or less with a contract. Verizon customers can use Verizon VZ Navigator software, while TeleNav's GPS Navigator, first available for Sprint only, now offers plans for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless. The company's latest software version, TeleNav Traffic, integrates live traffic information, a feature not all dedicated GPSs have.

So, what's the difference between a dedicated GPS device and a GPS-enabled phone? While a traditional GPS device uses orbiting satellites to determine your location, a cellphone with a GPS chip relies on a combination of satellite fixes and triangulation from cell towers. Another distinction is that the actual application, map and POIs reside on a separate server, rather than on the device itself. This means that your cellphone always has access to the most up to date maps and POIs—as often as the server is updated. Your phone communicates with this server whenever you request driving directions and other information. Your route is then calculated for you and sent to your phone along with maps, and even speech files that provide spoken street names. In addition, if your phone has a touchscreen or a QWERTY keyboard, it will make navigating the interface much easier.

VZ Navigator has a complete set of routing options, including fastest, shortest, and simplest. It also comes with vehicle profiles for Car/Motorcycle, Truck, Bicycle, and Pedestrian modes. Like many dedicated GPSs, you can choose to avoid highways, toll roads, and roads with HOV lanes. Once you've created a route, the screen will display information such as estimated trip time and distance to next turn. At any time, you can press the "Talk" key (usually the OK button) and it will announce your next turn. VZ Navigator also has a coveted feature—text to speech conversion, pronouncing street names, which leads to more specific commands like "Prepare to exit the highway in point two miles for highway three east." You can also use the companion Web site, vznavigator.com, to plan routes and send the results to right to your phone.
TeleNav's GPS Navigator works in much the same way as Verizon's software. One unique feature is the ability to call in a location using a toll-free number. You can also use addresses and locations stored in your address book. Once you've subscribed to the TeleNav service, you can conduct trip planning on your PC via telenav.com, which offers a nice selection of free navigation tools.
Of course, to use these services, you'll have to pay a subscription fee. Verizon offers a free trial for 14 days; after that, you can use the service for $2.99 a day or subscribe for unlimited use for $9.99 a month. Be warned though: if you don't have a wireless data plan, you will use air-time minutes that are not included in the per-day or monthly subscription. TeleNav's service plans average at $9.99/month for unlimited use. Your carrier may offer a free 30-day trial. Again, you may need to enroll in a data plan as well.

For the longest time, I've honestly felt that the Chinese iPhone clones have included every major feature from the original and then some. But, when the Nokia N95 became almost as popular as the iPhone, we were all waiting with baited breath for its clone. That's because the Nokia N95 has WiFi and GPS. We were hoping that one day these features would become standard in the clones. We already knew that CECT could pull off Windows Mobile because the current HiTune T68 includes it.

However, when the CECT N95 finally rolled out, it was a great phone full of great features and innovative design. In fact, everything was included - except WiFi and GPS. Although we understood that pricing kept some additions out, and we felt the phone was still a contender without them, we were still a touch disappointed.

Finally, though, there's reason to celebrate. The HiPhone T32 (the very latest version, and sometimes also called The Daxian X999) has finally included all three of these things as standard.

Of course, as always with the HiPhone you can: surf the web; email and text (WAP browsing, MMS and SMS messaging); take photos and video on the digital camera and video cam; enjoy Bluetooth; listen to and watch MP3s and MP4s; and use Java.

The one standard feature this one doesn't have is dual sim slots. However, it has improved the 2.0 mega pixel camera and added an e-book reader.

With the Windows additions like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as tons more third party software available, this phone has evolved into a little productivity powerhouse. And, in my testing, these additions do not slow the performance of the phone any. It is still zippy and intuitive. After all, it has an expandable memory of up to 2GB to work with.

Of course, we were bracing ourselves for the price. Current comparable clones without these new additions average around $150. So where does that leave this new version? Currently, it's between the low and upper $300s, depending on where you get it.

This price may fall as more become available, but I suspect that even with this price tag, these will fly off shelves because: the additions are too valuable to pass up; they were long desired; and they really do add so many more possibilities and applications to this phone. So, welcome to the party, T32. It's about time.

Other options through this company, like the $200 Garmin Mobile 10, include a GPS receiver for smartphones that don't have the GPS built in. Garmin also offers a $10 monthly network version for some standard Sprint phones.
TomTom Navigator 6—Aimed at turning smartphones and hand-held PCs into GPS devices. For $300, Navigator 6 includes maps on a memory card along with a GPS receiver that connects via Bluetooth. The $250 version puts the maps on a DVD, requiring a PC to move them to the phone. The $150 version does away with the GPS receiver (if your device already has one built in).

As most people carry their cell phone with them at all times, the ability is in place to track the exact movements of all individuals. Is this a case of Big Brother, and who can access to this information?
Cell Phone GPS tracking can prove useful in many walks of life and especially when an emergency arises. Picture the scene of a road accident where injuries have occurred. A 911 call made from a GPS cell phone would significantly speed up the arrival of the emergency services if the GPS signal from the cell phone can be pin-pointed to an exact location. This feature alone could save many lives.
For these reasons the FCC has instructed that wireless network providers provide the cell phone GPS tracking location information for 911 calls which have been made from cell phones. This is known as E911. In essence this is no different than a 911 call made from a land line, as the land line is registered to an address and the relevant emergency services can be quickly dispatched to that address.
However, where the difference occurs is that a property does not move but the tracking of a GPS cell phone is registering the day to day movements of an individual, and that has given rise to the privacy concerns of who can access such private information.
However, the relevant law relating to E911 is fairly explicit. It allows carriers to provide tracking location information to third parties for e911 emergency calls only, however not under any other circumstances whatsoever without the consent of the cell phone owner.
The privacy of cell phone GPS tracking has also been backed up by a number of recent court hearings. Recent court hearings have disallowed the requests of law enforcement agencies to obtain cell phone GPS tracking information from the cell phone companies for suspects. The courts have ruled that Congress have not authorized location tracking without actual evidence of wrongdoing and that probable cause is not sufficient reason for the release of records.
These events will ensure that the advantages of cell phone GPS tracking will not be compromised by privacy issues and that its long term future and usefulness is secured.
